The jolly grant airport is located about 25 km (16 mi) east of the city of Dehradun. Nestled in the foothills of Himalayas, the airport, after a runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft, has started commercial operations from 30 March 2008. The airport being located close to the holy city of Rishikesh, the gateway to the Himalayas, would enable tourists to fly in instead of travelling by rail or road.
The Airports Authority of India has expanded the runway at the airport. Earlier this airport could only handle small aircraft while now it can handle the Airbus A320s, Boeing 737s and other aircraft in their category.
